How Much Water Do Young Seedlings Need?

Young seedlings need enough water to keep the soil moist, especially during the first weeks after planting. However, more water does not always mean better growth. Too much water can suffocate roots and encourage rotting.

The best approach is to check the soil regularly. If the soil around the seedling feels dry, watering is needed. If it feels wet and heavy, wait before watering again. The goal is steady moisture, not flooding.

Watering should be done gently around the root zone. Avoid washing away soil from the base of the seedling. During hot periods, watering may be needed more often, while during rainy periods, the farmer should reduce watering.

Every farm is different. Soil type, weather, mulch, and seedling size all affect how much water is needed. Careful observation helps the farmer adjust watering and protect the seedling from both dryness and excess water.
