Why Mulching Helps Young Fruit Trees

Mulching is one of the simplest ways to support young fruit trees. It helps the soil retain moisture, protects roots from extreme heat, and reduces the number of weeds growing near the seedling.
A farmer can use dry grass, leaves, or other clean organic material as mulch. The mulch should be placed around the seedling, leaving a small space around the stem. If mulch touches the stem directly, it may encourage pests or rotting.
Mulch also improves soil slowly as it breaks down. Over time, it adds organic matter and supports better soil structure. This can help roots grow more comfortably and improve water movement in the soil.
Good mulching does not replace watering, but it reduces how quickly water is lost from the soil. For farmers planting during dry periods, mulch can make a big difference in seedling survival and early growth.
