How to Protect Young Seedlings From Drying

Young seedlings can dry quickly when they are exposed to strong sun, dry soil, or irregular watering. This usually happens during the first weeks after planting, when the roots are still adjusting and cannot yet collect enough moisture from deeper soil.

The first step is to water the seedling consistently. Do not wait until the leaves start folding or looking weak. Water early in the morning or late in the evening so the plant can absorb moisture without losing too much through heat.

Mulching can also help. Place dry grass, leaves, or other clean organic material around the seedling, but do not cover the stem directly. Mulch helps the soil hold moisture for longer and reduces weed growth around the young tree.

A farmer should also observe the seedling regularly. If the leaves look weak, the soil is too dry, or the seedling is exposed to too much wind, act early. Small corrections during the first days can save the plant from serious stress.
